Unit 4- Research trip to Plymouth Aquarium

After researching Frei Otto, the idea of looking into structures that animals create and looking at the animals as ‘structures’ came to me; instantly when thinking of animals with cool skin textures or interesting patterns or adaptions, the characteristics of a seahorse stood out to me. I feel a trip to Plymouth Aquarium to collect primary research will help me explore and further develop this idea. Before embarking on this trip I’ve decided to do a prior sketch and annotations on a board which I’ve included below, this also explains my idea in more detail.

Checklist:

  • Camera

  • Sketchbook

  • Variety of graphite pencils

  • Fine liner Pens

While in Plymouth I plan to also look at the surrounding buildings to see if I can see any green developments or structures that I could use as inspiration, I’ll collect this research by taking photographs.

Initial evaluation of Aquarium trip

My initial views after leaving the aquarium are that I would definitely like to carry on my idea of mimicking animals.

Final drawings

After visiting the aquarium I developed these drawings based on the texture of a seahorse's skin, I feel that once developed each one could develop into a strong design outcome.

Although my trip to Plymouth was not entirely successful, as I did not get to see the seahorses, it gave me the opportunity to look at the other marine life so this didn't prevent me from doing some useful research. I looked at the fish scales and saw a correlation between how the fish scales were laid out and some mathematical patterns.

Coming across the green bike-shed roof at Plymouth University also made my trip worthwhile; I took the time to sketch it which allowed me to grasp a greater understanding of the structure and how it functioned. I also took the opportunity to visit The Box, Museum & Art Gallery where I found some interesting models of ships which gave me some ideas for how I would approach making the model of my final design.
