Unit 4 - Developing my final piece

Before creating my final piece I’d like to explore different techniques for making it to ensure I get the best possible outcome. I plan to do this through using techniques such as papier mache and materials such as wire and fabric (which I plan to drape); I feel once I‘ve experimented with these various techniques and materials I’ll find my desired outcome, which is one that has a ‘sleek’ and ‘clean’ finish. I hope for my final piece to encapsulate minimalism, as I want the focus to be on the design of the roof and I wouldn‘t want to take away from this by heavily ’decorating’ or ‘embellishing’ it.

Prototype 1

This is the first Prototype I made and the idea came to me randomly when i was painting using a disposable paint pallete, which i actually used as a mole to papier-mâché round. After completing the papier-mâché I decided to cover the surface in Heisan fabric as i wanted to give it more stability. I liked this design and how it loooked aesthetically although I wondered how the technology I plan to use would work with it, after careful thinking this was the reason i decided no to take this design forwards.

Prototype 2

I decided against prototype two which was made in the same way as prototype two although I dipped it into plaster as I felt the roof wasn’t mouldable enough as i want to be able to manipulate it to create dramatic effect.

Prototype 3

Made using just the papier-mâché technic and then wire along the sides which aloud me to manipulate its shape so it was curved, I the covered it with masking tape and filled the iside with a mix i made from with acrylic and PVA. I felt once I’d perfected the making process this idea could work, although eventually came to the conclusion I didn‘t like the design aesthetically.

Prototype 4

Quick experimentation of how I could mimic the seahorse skin texture.

Prototype 5

Basic wire model exploring the curved shape.

Prototype 6

Finally I came up with this design, this is by far my favourite design and the one I’m going to take forwards. I used matchsticks and a hot glue gun to start with and then decided to line the holes with tracing paper.

Development of final outcome-

Finally moving onto making my final piece i felt a huge feeling of relief as I’d explored all create pathways i could of taken with the design of my model and found one that that I feel will really work. When making the final model I used a protractor at 130 degrees to make sure each angle was the same. Using a glue gun was quite fiddly but meant i could take bits apart and restock them if i wasn’t happy with them in any way.

Deciding on the base for my roof

I draw up the designs above when I was looking at what body I’d like to put my roof on I decided on the simple roof design( the second one of the right), i chose this as i thought it showed of the roof the best singularly and as it was so open you’re able to look underneath and look at the design from a different perspective.

Finally i decided to spray paint the whole model white to give it more of a sleek finish and place it on some fake grass, i did this to give it more to scale feeling.
